Opponent Profiling: A Key Strategy in Poker

One good thing about poker is that even though it is a card game, winning relies less on chance and more on strategy. This means that in order to win in poker, one does not need to be so lucky and draw good hands all the time, one only needs an effective poker strategy. And one of the components of an effective poker strategy is the skill of opponent profiling.

The meaning of opponent profiling is accurately predicting your opponents' behavior. This is done through observing your opponents' game and physical behavior, their action tendencies across situations, and their interaction with different players.

Game behavior includes the tendency to fold, to raise or call, and if they do bet, what the pot odds are. As a part of an effective poker strategy, one must correctly predict when a player is most likely to bluff, and when this bluff is a fake. For example, an opponent may be profiled as a bluffer, but one must be wary of exchanging bets against that opponent, as they may be holding better cards.

Physical behaviors are perhaps the easiest aspect to observe, but it can also be the most distracting. To profile your opponents correctly, look for tells, or those unconscious and uncontrollable behaviors a player does when confronted with a certain situation. For example, a player might fidget more when holding a good hand; or maybe a talkative player almost always becomes silent when slow playing. Ignore the distracting parts, those unnecessary behavior players do in order to veer their opponents away from correctly profiling them.

But also look out for traps, or the kind of tells which lures opponents into incorrect guesses. To avoid traps, one must not only observe, but act upon the situation. This means one needs to insert other aspects of an effective poker strategy, such as isolation plays, or the proper times to raise or call.

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of profiling is observing each player's interaction with other players. The idea behind this is that a poker player commits different reactions and actions with different players. This means that an opponent might be playing tight against another opponent, or playing loosely against another one. This is a key point of observation, as when coupled with other components of an effective poker strategy, one could control the board easily.

Remember that in poker, strategy is what is important, luck comes only second. Opponent profiling is one of the valuable and indispensable skills a poker player should have. Through observing game and physical behavior, as well as interactions with other players, it would be easy for you to create and pitch in other components of an effective poker strategy; and eventually, bring home the pot.
